There is a modern-day myth in the entrepreneurial industry around how hustling to reach your goals is the best way to gain productivity in your business and therefore achieve your accomplishments.
When we glamorize the ability to work from sunup to sundown, how are we going to be relatable to our audience and/or clients when they are looking for a lifestyle that not only gives them financial freedom but more importantly time freedom?
I am here to debunk that myth. It’s time to put the hustle to bed.
Here is why you should stop the hustle, and the potential damage it could do to your business as well as your overall life.
It sets us up for unforeseen expectations.
When hustle becomes our only action, we tend to have no boundaries with our work. Whether we are tired, sick, or if things in life come up (newsflash: it’s going to happen) we don’t stop.
This is not a sustainable business approach. (And it’s a big “no for me, dawg”) If we are not listening to our body cues, it’s inevitable that both mental and physical exhaustion will set in.
Hustle encourages an unhealthy lifestyle.
Sleep is not your enemy, it’s a necessity needed to achieve success. When our mind is in a constant state of work, it is hard for our body and mind to go into a peaceful state of sleep. We cannot ignore our ability to rest and rejuvenate; our body and mind simply won’t allow for it.
The hustle culture also can have a negative impact on inner health, in which it can provide nutritional damage when we aren’t focused on fueling our body with the proper nutrients it needs to perform at an optimal level.
There is also the physical effect. Sitting at a computer for hours and hours a day can cause multiple issues for our physical health. Get up and get outside. Go for a walk, do some yoga or do a quick meditation. Give your body some movement and your mind a break.
The hustle culture comes with exhaustion.
We all have the same hours in a day. My life mantra is grounded in creating a life, not just a living. Hustling is pushing ourselves to strive for that one thing, and never taking the time to pursue other things in life.
No matter how hard we work, we can never gain our time back. When our task list is constantly filled with work the result is choosing to give something else up.
If you are constantly choosing to do something work-related, you are sacrificing other things that bring you joy. You are not being rewarded for your hard work and therefore exhaustion kicks in and resentment increases.
It promotes burnout.
There will be moments in your business where you have sprints of time where it feels as though you are burning the candle at both ends to hit your goals.
Moments being the keyword. This should not be the longevity of your business.
You have to have time to allow yourself to decompress and enjoy the world around you. If you don’t there is a good chance it will heighten your anxiety and fatigue which will more than likely end in burnout.
We seek collaboration over competition.
Now, don’t get me wrong there is nothing wrong with a little competition. It fuels our drive to succeed. However, when we are in a constant state of hustle, our motivation to compete becomes toxic.
It is no longer a positive state of mind, it now has turned into you stopping at nothing to out-hustle your colleagues. The result of that leads to the lack of relationships you may have to support you in your business endeavors.
Competition is healthy as long as it’s not at the expense of hurting the people around you. When we are grounded with where our businesses are headed we have the opportunity to collaborate with other colleagues and mentors.
Collaboration can make a positive difference and a great impact on your business. I freaking love collaborating with other business owners! Networking and building relationships is my jam.
At the end of the day-long hours will happen. Hard work is absolutely necessary. But, at what cost? The cost of living the life that we desire?
Hustling is not the only way to create a life worth living. In fact, too much hustling only creates unsustainability and desperation for us to achieve that next title, client, or paycheck.
Respect your own boundaries, and know that you have physical, mental, and emotional limitations and you need to be aligned with them. This will allow you to realize when to push forward and when to hold back.
Strive to put the hustle to bed. Push for an environment that celebrates hard work. Your time outside of work is just as important, if not more important than the time you put into our work.
